With spring in full swing, many of us are beginning to feel the effects of hayfever taking hold. Whilst they can play havoc with our sinuses, are you aware of the effects that pollen and dust particles can have on your car? The built-in air and pollen filters both have slightly different roles, but both are equally important in maintaining your vehicle’s health.
How do they work?
To keep your vehicle running smoothly, air and pollen filters take a difference approach in maintaining your health, as well as the health of your engine and its components, providing clean air and preventing harmful dust or debris from impacting your vehicle’s function.
An air filter ensures that only clean air passes through your engine, by capturing and blocking the entrance of dust, dirt, or harmful debris into your engine.
A pollen filter purifies the air of pollen particles, providing a comfortable environment for both the driver and passengers within the car.
The importance of air and pollen filters…
…for the engine
The efficiency of your engine and its components are partly reliant on your air and pollen filters. By preventing the entrance of harmful dust and dirt particles, you can ensure that your engine is operating in the cleanest possible environment.
…for the air conditioning
The cleanliness of your pollen filter can positively benefit the function of your air conditioning system, ensuring it provides clean warm and cool air into the cabin of the vehicle, as well as effectively de-misting your windscreen.
…for the comfort of those in the cabin
By preventing the unwanted entrance of pollen particles, your pollen filter will work to provide the cabin with the cleanest air, reducing the risk of dangerous or distracted driving and keeping journeys of all lengths safe and comfortable.
…for the lifespan of your car
As with many things, the components of your vehicle will have a positive impact on its lifespan – and this includes the air and pollen filters! By eliminating the entrance of harmful or damaging particles and debris, you can provide your engine and cabin with the ability to run smoothly for an extended period of time.
…for your pocket
With your vehicle running smoothly, there will be minimal likelihood of your car requiring unexpected repair or replacement work to reverse or amend faults or damaged aspects of the car, in turn, being kinder on your pocket over time!
How often should air and pollen filters be replaced?
Whilst your air and pollen filters are exceptionally practical, there will come a time where they will require a replacement. Many manufacturers suggest that this occurs every 12,000 – 15,000 miles, but a more accurate timeframe will be stated within your vehicle’s handbook. However, if you feel that you and your vehicle would benefit from a replacement before this period is reached, your local garage will be happy to help. Factors such as the air pollution in your area, or if pollen levels are increasingly high and are beginning to affect your driving, could justify your need for an early replacement.
